RUTGERS UNVEILS COURTROOM IN NATHAN BAKER'S MEMORY

    Harvey C. Fisher

Those who knew the late Nathan Baker, founder of the Hoboken firm Baker, Pedersen & Robbins, said the dedication of a courtroom at a law school in his honor speaks volumes about the man's life in the law.

After all, they said, he loved lecturing to young lawyers as much as he valued going up against the older ones at trial.

Last week the Baker Trial Courtroom at Rutgers Law School-Newark, a striking high-tech facility built with $1 million donation from his widow, Sylvia, and tow attorney sons, Gerald and Robert, was dedicated. Filling most of the 89 seats in the 62-foot by 44-foot facility for the ceremony were some of the state's most prominent figures, including officials of the New Jersey State Bar Association, the Association of Trails Lawyers of America-New Jersey, the Institute of Continuing Legal Education and other organizations.

Gerald H. Baker, the Hoboken attorney who is considered among the state's most knowledgeable on auto insurance law, traced the life and legacy of his dad, who died in 1992 at age 86.

"What I learned from him is that tort law is the engine for change," he said. "And it is the trail lawyer who is really the engineer."

Rutgers Law Dean Stuart L. Deutsch said the new courtroom this fall will be the setting of the Nathan Baker Mock Trail Program, adding he hopes the facility some day will be used by state and federal courts.

But the bottom line, the dean noted, is what the Baker Trial Courtroom will man for years to come for prospective lawyers. "For a law school, the courtroom is the ultimate place for students to learn."
